Increasing the safety and efficiency of aircraft
SmartTraffic™ technology is the foundation for Honeywell’s ADS-B enabled Hybrid Surveillance and Airborne Traffic Situational Awareness (ATSAW) functions. These functions increase flight safety by providing a more intuitive display of surrounding aircraft, while also allowing pilots to better plan for oceanic flight level changes to reduce fuel burn – resulting in significant cost savings.
There are currently three SmartTraffic applications that enable efficiency:
- Airborne Traffic Situational Awareness (ATSA-AIRB)
- Enhanced Visual Separation on Approach (ATSA-VSA)
- In-Trail Procedures in Oceanic Airspace (ATSA-ITP)
Developed in partnership with Airbus, the ATSAW system is comprised of Honeywell’s CAS 100 Traffic Surveillance System with Change 7.1 and SmartTraffic technology.
- First to certify ATSAW with Airbus and will be the first to enter into service (2010)
- Only ATSAW offering that does not require new TCAS Hardware – translates into a savings of more than US$25,000 per aircraft upgrade compared to other ATSAW solutions
- Only ATSAW solution to provide both TCAS Change 7.1 and Hybrid Surveillance as part of the Traffic Computer upgrade
Key SmartTraffic operational benefits:
- Reduces fuel burn through transoceanic flight routing using In-Trail procedures – can save over US $100,000 per aircraft per year using CRISTAL ITP
- Increases safety and situational awareness by displaying more aircraft and more information than TCAS-only systems
- Enhances operational efficiency by enabling more timely landings using own-aircraft visual separation on approach in marginal visibility conditions
- Reduces pilot workload and training using an intuitive display of traffic that optimizes pilot-ATC communications
SmartTraffic Benefits with TCAS Change 7.1 and Hybrid Surveillance upgrade:
- Mitigates the risk of a potential mid-air collision by addressing key safety hazards and providing a clear course of action
- Utilizes ADS-B Hybrid Surveillance technology to reduce 1090 frequency congestion and improve pilot situational awareness
